Multiple beaches left unprotected on the North and South Coast

Here is a list of beaches currently open to bathers.

With warmer weather forecast for this weekend, many people will be flocking to our picturesque beaches for a day in the sun and waves.

Beach goers are however warned to be extra careful, as the number of protected beaches has been temporarily reduced until further notice.

In a statement issued by the KZN Sharks Board, Head of Operations Mike Anderson-Reade said they are currently experiencing industrial action with its labour force.

“As such we have had to temporarily reduce the number of protected beaches the organisation is able to service with the limited resources available,” said Anderson-Reade.

Bathing is currently open at the following beaches:

  • North Coast: Willards Beach and Umhlanga Rocks main beach.
  • Durban: Ushaka to Suncoast Beach inclusive.
  • South Coast: Hibberdene, Umzumbe, Southport, St Michaels, Uvongo, Lucien, Margate, Ramsgate, Southbroom, San Lameer and Trafalgar.

“Visitors to the beaches are requested to check with the lifeguards prior to entering the water at any of the non-mentioned beaches.

“The Board will continue to render services to the best of its ability during this period.”
