Pensioner’s Guide: Living it up on the Dolphin Coast
On a mission to find the best kept secrets of pensioner life in Ballito, we spoke to locals for some insider information.
North Coast seniors are hip and happening and proudly claim their pensioner status as they have earned their golden years and silver hair – and let’s not forget the pensioner discounts.
On a mission to find the best kept secrets of pensioner life in Ballito, we spoke to locals for some insider information.
The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund‘s Rose Stephenson is a stylish gran, not only to her own two grandchildren, but to many an orphan as well.
She said she gladly embraced the benefits of being over 60, especially when she is on the golf course.
“When people first asked me if I was pensioner, I was quite offended. Now I make sure they know I am one.
“I really enjoy the pensioner discount on golf fees.”
Fellow Ballito resident and recent member of the plus 60 group, John Kemble has a couple of hidden gems for pensioners to enjoy.
“I only just turned 61, so I don’t see myself as an old toppie looking for good deals.
“However, I would recommend shopping at Pick n Pay because of their price match guarantee – this states that you won’t pay more there than at any other shop and if you do, you will get the difference as a discount on your next purchase.
“Also, if you find yourself at their butchery, ask for Wayne – he will give you the best meat you will ever get.”

His top tip for a weekend treat is the Ballito Gesinskerk NG pancake fundraisers on Saturdays from 7am till 9am.
“They make the best pancakes and it is a great way to hang out with the grandkids or simply get out of the house for the morning.”
Lastly, he said local pensioners have the best opportunity to enjoy the sea thanks to the fantastic tidal pools in Ballito.
“We all live next to the beach, but no one goes to the beach. We often go snorkeling at Thompsons Bay tidal pool or swim at the Ballito pool below Ocean Basket. It is such a simple and wonderful way to spend time outdoors and you don’t have to worry about the shore break.”
Pensioner discount expert Rosie Harker said Ballito is wonderfully pensioner friendly.
