Baby found abandoned in Maphumulo

Police are appealing to the community for any information that will lead to the family of a baby found abandoned on Sunday.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the baby boy was found abandoned near an unoccupied house on the R74 highway in Maphumulo by a passerby.

“Detectives from the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit are requesting the community to assist in locating the next of kin of the boy.”

Zwane said the baby was found clothed and wrapped with a blanket. He was taken to hospital and a case of child abandonment was opened in the Maphumulo police station.

Kwadukuza SAPS’ Sibusiso Khuzwayo told the Courier the little one was currently at Maphumulo Hospital in a good condition and that he would be sent to King Edard hospital today to ascertain his age.

“The baby is crawling so he cannot be a newborn as was originally reported.”

He said the hospital staff have nicknamed him ‘Constable Ntombela’ after the officer who found him.
