Pedestrian killed on Chakas Rock bridge – Ballito
The driver of the doublecab has been taken into custody for blood tests to determine whether he was driving while over the legal limit for alcohol.
A pedestrian was killed when a doublecab bakkie and truck were involved in a head-on crash this morning (Saturday) at around 8am.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, the accident occurred on the Chakas Rock bridge over the N2.
“It is not clear which vehicle struck the pedestrian, he was knocked off the road onto the grass,” said Herbst.
Herbst said four people in the truck were injured, while the driver of the bakkie escaped unharmed.
Paramedics treated the injured before they were transported to hospital for further care.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay confirmed that the driver of the bakkie had been taken into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence.
“Officers have taken him to hospital, where he will be tested to determine if he was driving drunk,” Pillay said.
Herbst rubbished rumours that had spread over WhatsApp that rock throwing was somehow involved.
“Some debris from the accident fell down onto the highway and one lane was temporarily closed, there was no rock throwing whatsoever.”
