Ballito UIP gears for the new year

Traffic light repairs, speed humps, cameras and improvements to the beachfront walkway are just a few of the mammoth projects the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) plan to take on in 2019.

This comes after another busy year working alongside KwaDukuza municipality to better the Ballito area by building investor confidence, upping security and taking care of general maintenance.

UIP security manager Dieter Fittkau said security had drastically improved.

“Historically you would have had an average of 72 cases of housebreakings just on the promenade alone. Since we joined, we have had four incidents in three years.”

At the AGM held at the Ilembe Chamber boardroom last week, Ballito UIP management outlined their plans, announcing a budget of R12.5 million for the 2018/2019 financial year.

UIP director Brian Wright said plans also included improved security, beach node development and a landscaping masterplan for the Ballito business park and main entrances to Ballito.

“We have a number of landscape projects on the cards and there are plans to improve the beachfront walkway. We are also hoping to include residential properties within the UIP boundaries,” said Wright.

The UIP has asked for auxiliary community safety officers to enforce bylaws in public areas, since drinking alcohol in places like the beach has become a problem.

They also plan to remove the centre island on Douglas Crowe Drive between Engen and Tiger Wheel & Tyre and repair and straighten traffic lights.

Speed humps are to be installed in Douglas Crowe Dr, Moffatt Dr and Stewarts Dr.

“We are currently awaiting KDM’s approval for number plate recognition cameras in the business park. Next year we can look forward to four of these cameras as part of our security management plan.”

This year, the organisation has been kept busy with special projects that focused on maintenance and safety.

“Additional lights were installed at Boulder Bay, the wooden staircase was replaced at Foch Le Roux beach and gardens were planted along the P445 verge outside Ballito Junction mall and the N2 business park entrances as well as in Kirsty Close.

“We were involved in the upgrading of the taxi rank and installing a 700-metre meridian fence in Ballito Drive. Twenty storm water drains were replaced this year and we repaved 36 metres of business park pavement,” said Wright.
