UPDATE: R102 open following Etete protest

A meeting to hopefully resolve the situation will be held in Shakaskraal tomorrow.

The R102 in Etete has been reopened following two days of protest action by members of the ANC Youth League in Nkobongo, Shayamoya and Etete.

The road had been blocked by broken bottles and burning tyres, as angry residents complained about the lack of employment for local people at a factory near Shakaskraal.

What started off as a picket on Friday, later turned into a protest on Saturday morning when the residents felt they were being ignored by the local leadership and the factory management.

Today, they took their frustration out on Sasko Bakery, which is located next to the factory in question, INSA PTY Ltd, blocking the entrance with burning tyres.

“We were eventually addressed by KwaDukuza municipality councillors and officials.

“We will have a meeting tomorrow in Shakaskraal to discuss our issues,” said one of the protesters,  who asked to remain anonymous.
