POWER ALERT: Stage 2 loadshedding

Switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand.

Stage 2 loadshedding is underway and will run until 10pm this evening.

Some improvement in generation performance and the notable strides made in replenishing water and diesel reserves, resulted in Eskom only needing to implement stage 2.

The power utility said in a statement that while losing three units totaling 823MW, one unit of 600MW was successfully returned to service today as planned.

“While there has been some improvement, the power system continues to remain vulnerable.

“Should Eskom experience significant unplanned generator trips, this could impact the magnitude and risk of loadshedding.

“While Eskom was concerned about the risk to our operations as a result of Wednesday’s planned national strike action by COSATU, we can confirm that none of our operations were affected.”

Stage 2 allows for up to 2000 MW of the national load to be shed.

According to the schedule, Ballito (the Southern Grid: all KDM areas south of Groutville up to just about the Isenembe turnoff on the R102) will not be affected.

The Stanger Northern Grid (north of Groutville, up to Zamani and Kearsney and up to Nonoti River) will be off from 2pm – 4.30pm.

Eskom has appealed to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period.

Switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand.
