UPDATE: Peri the sea chicken to remain in Umdloti

Despite many an offer of a new home for Umdloti’s rescued sea chicken, Peri a.k.a Hoendertjie has decided she is perfectly happy where she is.

Her adopted mom Almi Kirby has looked after Peri since May last year when she found the distraught chicken on the beach after a traditional ritual.

Kirby originally wanted to rehome Peri to a farm where she could roam with other chickens. Peri, however, had no intention of leaving her new home in Umdloti.

“Peri has become a different chicken since our move.

“She hops out of my bedroom window into the garden and spends the day playing and scratching in the sand.

“In the afternoon, she hops back in and comes for a cuddle before going to lay her egg,” said Kirby.

She said Peri has become quite the celebrity chicken after the recent Courier article about her second chance at life.

“People recognise us in the shops and on the street. It is so funny, they all want to meet Hoendertjie.

“The caretaker of our complex even came and introduced her two little dogs to Peri and welcomed her in her new home.”

Kirby said she is grateful to everyone who offered to give Peri a home on a farm where she would have had more company.

“I always felt guilty that Hoendertjie is alone and cannot have chicks, but now she has become such a wonderful, dear pet to me and we just have the best time in our new home. We could not be happier that things worked out so beautifully.”
