Etete Gogo lucky to be alive, loses everything in shack fire

The family have lost everything, including important documents like ID's and birth certificates.

A 73-year-old sick Gogo was nearly burnt alive when her daughter’s wooden shack caught fire in Etete last week.

Eunice Mkhize was staying in a wooden shack with her daughter, Gugu Mkhize, who is a domestic worker in Salt Rock.ck.

Gugu said her 10-year-old child forgot to extinguish a candle and the whole shack caught fire.

“My sick mother was sleeping inside and when the fire started, she managed to crawl towards the door and fortunately neighbours managed to rescue her before the gas cylinder exploded,” she said.

Nothing remains of the family’s home.

She said they lost everything, including important documents like ID and birth certificates.

“We were all left with only the clothes that we were wearing. When I got home, the shack was already finished. I do not know what I am going to do.”

With the help of their friend, the two women and child are staying in one room until they find a place to stay of their own.

Anyone who can help the family with donations of furniture or clothing can contact Mkhize on 079 086 1138.
