Meet Ballito’s ‘Mr Fix It’

Ballito resident Kevin Hickman was named BMW’s top technician in Africa at the BMW dealer awards recently held in Pretoria.

“It was really nice to be recognised although it came as a surprise. It was a day of honour all round as Ballito SMG also walked away with the best dealership of the year award.”

The 30 year old said he loved, and even craved, fixing things and even in his leisure time he was always looking for something to fix.

“It all started when I was a little boy, I would strip my toys apart and put them all together again.”

Hickman said it was due to his obsession with cars, after matriculating in 2006, that he got himself a job at the Legends cars motor sport in Johannesburg, where he was in the pit crew.

“I always wanted to work with cars, either fixing or upgrading them.

“I really enjoy a challenge. I cannot explain the excitement I get when I actually get to figure out what is wrong with a car that was brought in by a worried customer,” he said with a grin.

Hickman joined BMW in 2011 and got his technician certificate from the BMW Academy in 2014. He is the only one holding a high voltage certificate at the Balllito SMG.

“I just want to get my hands dirty. I just do not feel good if I end a day without fixing something.”
