A guide to finding the ultimate pillow

The secret to a good night’s sleep is the right pillow according to Ballito Junction’s The Pillow Bar manager Sunelle Schouten.

There is nothing quite as frustrating as tossing and turning during the night and waking up with a stiff neck or sore back.

The secret to a good night’s sleep is the right pillow according to Ballito Junction’s The Pillow Bar manager Sunelle Schouten.

“Sleeping on the wrong pillow can cause anything from neck, shoulder, back and hip pain or discomfort to recurring headaches, fatigue and increased snoring.

“There are even major health risks associated with poor quality sleep such as an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer,” said Schouten.

She said it is key to understand what your pillow should be doing for you when you choose one.

“A good pillow should support the weight of your head and neck without collapsing or applying pressure. It needs to fit like a glove, leaving no gap between your neck and head. Correct support will allow for longer, deeper, more restful sleep.”

Once you have found the pillow of your dreams, it is important to know what lifespan you can expect from it.

“A polyester pillow will last about six to 12 months, memory foam will give you 12 to 19 months, whereas feather/down or gel pillows can go three to four years.

“A Tempur pillow can last from three to eight years.”
