Umhlali Country Club voted greenest golf club in SA
UCC came out tops in a survey of more than 400 golf clubs across the country in a measure of good governance and environmental compliance.
The Umhlali Country Club can boast being the greenest club in South Africa.
UCC came out tops in a survey of more than 400 golf clubs across the country in a measure of good governance and environmental compliance.
This is the second time Umhlali Country Club has won the prestigious John Collier environmental award, after achieving top club status in 2015/2016.
“What Umhlali Country Club did well was to link the sustainability principles of people, profit and planet into the club’s value system,” Collier told a club’s executive at an awards ceremony on Saturday.

The Top Club Award is given to coincide with World Environment Day, which has been celebrated as an annual event on June 5 since 1973. Each year the day is organised around a theme decided by the United Nations that focuses attention on a pressing environmental concern.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Beat Air Pollution,” a call to action to combat this global crisis.
“There were several strong contenders this year, with the Gary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Course receiving special mention. However, the judges were really impressed with the work that is being done at the Umhlali Country Club that is without doubt currently the national benchmark. Umhlali outshone all others to be the top club in South Africa for good governance and environmental compliance survey reporting,” said Collier.
Since the sustainability agenda would not be upheld without committed and passionate people who embrace the benefits of sustainability, good governance and environmental compliance, the report made special mention of general manager, John Boyce, golf director Derick Reinke and course superintendent Robin Naicker.
