Sardine Run resurfaces between Bazely and Amanzimtoti
Swimming between Isipongo and Port Edward has been banned.
The elusive Sardine Run seems to have reappeared along a five kilometre stretch between Bazely and Amanzimtoti, 1 kilometre offshore.
On Wednesday morning, 40 to 50 Cape Gannets circling the area, as well as the increased shark activity, drew attention to the shoal of sardines which have continued to elude fisherman’s nets.
The Kwa-Zulu Natal Sharks Board also reported sightings of Yellowfin Tuna getting involved in the action.
The sighting is good news, but the acting head of operations at the Sharks Board, Greg Thompson, warns that “these fish are very unpredictable and are capable of doing disappearing acts overnight”.

Although nets in Pennington, Scottburgh, Illovo and Winkle continue to come up empty, two nettings in Amanzimtoti have come up with a total of 261 crates of sardine.
The nettings, along with yesterday’s sardine sighting, could be the beginning of the sardine frenzy fisherman have been waiting for.
The Sharks Board promise to continue monitoring any sardine activity with the hopes of providing leads for KZN fisherman.
As of today, Thompson advises fisherman to “take advantage of any action”, as the weather is due to shift tomorrow.
The general uncertainty of the shoal’s whereabouts means that caution should be taken whilst swimming in certain areas along the coast.
Swimming between Isipongo and Port Edward is banned and Thompson encouraged the public to confirm with lifeguards before swimming in the surrounding areas.
