ANC in KwaDukuza deliberates over Zondi

The political party appears to be split into factions for and against the former regional secretary.

African National Congress members in the General Gizenga Mpanza region, will know after two weeks if former regional secretary, Musa Zondi will be reinstated or not.

This was revealed by provincial chairperson Sihle Zikalala in a meeting between the provincial working committee and regional executive committee held at the Ilembe Auditorium on Sunday.

The political party appears to be split into factions for and against the leader.

The meeting came after ANC members against the move recently brought KwaDukuza to a standstill.

They claimed the PEC were behind the move to return Zondi to office.

They said this would be against the constitution of the ANC, which states that any member who had been found guilty and sentenced in a court of law, cannot lead the ANC.

Zondi was suspended after he was found guilty of murder and kidnapping and he was sentenced by the Pietermaritzburg High Court last year. He later appealed and he is currently out on bail.

However, there is another group, including the ANC Youth League, who are in support of Zondi. As the meeting was taking place on Sunday, the two groups stood outside the auditorium singing political songs for the meeting’s duration.

“Zikalala said Zondi’s matter is not yet finalised. He asked the branches to give them two weeks so that the PEC could sit first and they will then come and communicate the decision,” said regional spokesperson Thandeka Ngidi.

Another issue raised during the protest, was a call for an early conference because the members claimed the REC was no longer fit to serve the region.

They also claimed that their letters to the PEC have gone unanswered.

“The chairperson said the letters received by the PSO were not enough or did not meet the threshold to guarantee the branches an early conference.

“General Gizenga Mpanza Region has 77 branches and 44 branches are reported to have sent letters.

“The PWC could not say as to how many letters they received hence they agreed to give the branches one week for re-submission, starting from this past Sunday,” said Ngidi.

There will be a political workshop for the REC members to further educate them on their responsibilities and what is expected of them as the regional leadership and the PEC will take over on some of the REC responsibilities.

“There will be an investigation into the various alleged misconducts by some REC members and those who are alleged to have taken part in the recent KwaDukuza protest.

“Some branches of the KwaDukuza sub-region have asked that some REC members to no longer attend their sub regional meetings. The branches had expressed that they were unhappy with their conduct as the regional leadership,” said Ngidi.

Zikalala pleaded with the ANC members to protect the ANC’s brand because their actions would either kill or make the organisation.

“He further cautioned members to stop posting internal organisational matters on social media, especially Facebook.

KwaDukuza town was left in chaos by the political infighting.
