New leg for Shaka’s Head schoolgirl who lost her limb falling beneath a moving train

The Ballito Lions have rallied together to get Nondu a prosthetic leg.

18-year-old Shaka’s Head disabled school pupil, Nondumiso Khuzwayo, is filled with joy as she will be soon getting a prosthetic leg.

Nondumiso lost her leg in a train accident at the Charlottedale (Groutville) railway station towards the end of 2017.

“I was visiting my friends and decided to take a train going home. As I was about to get into the train, it started moving and I fell onto the line,” said Nondumiso.

Her mother, Florence Luthuli, said the horrific accident came as a shock and it was very hard for her daughter to recover from the emotional pain of losing her leg.

“I wish I had enough words that will show how grateful I am about my girl getting a leg. I am sure she will be able to walk better that she is. Thank you to everyone involved in this project,” said Luthuli.

Following a three month stay at Stanger Hospital, she had to repeat grade eight. However, the brave young lady is now doing well in grade 10 and is determined to continue studying hard in order to realise her dream of becoming a social worker.

Thanks to Shaka’s Head ward committee member, Goodman Mdletshe, her story reached the ears of the Ballito Lions Club who took the initiative to help her.

Nondumiso is beyond delighted.

“The leg will definitely make my life easier.

“I am currently using crutches to walk from home to the Shaka’s Head off-ramp, where I take a taxi to school.

“The walk used to take me less than 30 minutes, but now it takes me an hour or more,” said Nondumiso.

She was very grateful to have friends who carry her bag and slowly make the walk with her every day.

Lions President Paul Naidoo said the leg will cost about R50 000 and Nondumiso will need to undergo rehabilitation before she will be able to fully use the prosthetic.

“She will have to attend rehab sessions at least eight or ten times. SMG Ballito will transport her from Ballito to Durban for the rehab,” said Naidoo.

He said anyone who wished to be part of the project could contact the Ballito Lions.

“This is a very big project and if there is anyone who wants to donate towards it, we would appreciate it,” said Naidoo, who is contactable on 083 7753 199.
