WATCH: Seal rescued off Chaka’s Rock beach
The seal was captured and relocated to a secluded beach, to rest undisturbed.
A distressed sub-antarctic fur seal was rescued after it was found stranded between Chaka’s Rock and Catfish beach early on Saturday morning.
Local animal rescue network volunteers from the Ballito National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Ushaka Seal team and SRU responded to calls at around 9am following eyewitness reports that a seal was washed ashore near Chaka’s Rock beach area.

“Members of the public walking along the beach spotted the distressed animal and raised the alarm, ” said Ballito NSRI volunteer Quentin Power.
The seal was captured and relocated to a secluded beach, to rest undisturbed.
Powell said the operation was carried out successfully without incident and once released the seal swam off and no further assistance was required,
Of all species of seals the sub-antarctic fur seals wanders the most, and are frequently found along the coasts of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and South America.
They are widespread geographically but closer to home they breed on Marion Island which is about 2000 km south of Port Elizabeth.
