Michelle Sewraj has a passion for change
Michelle took the big leap from working in the formal sector to following her dream to transform communities by working to bring about positive change in the lives of women, youth and children.

Michelle Sewraj’s story reminds us that pursuing our dreams remains our most powerful path to success.
As the founder and director of Nation Builders, a non-profit organisation she founded in 2015 that focuses on the development and upliftment of women, youth and children, Michelle has become an active community advocate.
The mother of two is a teacher by profession and has 13 years experience working with children.
With a degree in psychology and a post graduate qualification in education, Michelle took the big leap from working in the formal sector to following her dream to transform communities by working to bring about positive change in the lives of women, youth and children.
“My defining moment happened while I was attending a leadership conference in Malayasia. Everything the speaker said resonated with me and it sowed the seed of change.
“That is when the concept of Nation Builders took fruition and I began the process of registering the organisation and building a vision of what I wanted to achieve,” said Michelle.
Nation Builders was registered in 2016. Their motto is simple: ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’.
Based in Ballito, Michelle, who is a certified trainer and assessor, is passionate about what she does and talks animatedly about engaging and empowering young people to be change-makers.
Michelle describes her work as challenging but rewarding.
Looking after a number of youth skills development programmes at underprivileged schools, her work also encompasses youth entrepreneurship and programmes targeting women.
She is determined to affect change with Nation Builders: “With the current high youth unemployment rate it seems ever more necessary to equip young people with skills that enable them to adapt and thrive.
We want to empower young people to shape the future that they want, rather than only reacting to it.
To genuinely support young people to become leaders we need to work across all sectors.”
