Top landscaping award for Simbithi estate
More than 100 projects were entered into the 2019 competition with each region appointing its own judges.
Difficult climatic conditions did not deter a local environmental and landscaping team from their bid to create beautiful landscapes.
At the annual South African Landscaping Institute (SALI) awards held in Cape Town recently, local residential estate Simbithi Eco-Estate scooped double gold and also walked away with the trophy for Best Environmental Landscape Work in South Africa.
Judging is done at two levels for the SALI awards. The first level is on a regional basis with teams of judges visiting all the projects entered.
More than 100 projects were entered into the 2019 competition with each region appointing its own judges.
All the projects that score 75 percent plus are then judged by a national judge, who travels to all those projects and together with the regional results, will assess the projects and make the final decision on the awards.

The institute encourages emerging trends and a move towards a more sustainable approach to landscaping initiatives.
The national judge is appointed by the SALI National Executive committee.
The institute has grown consistently over the years and remains the only standards body, national representative and voice for landscaping professionals in South Africa.
Simbithi Eco-Estate general manager, Malcolm Samuel said, “This was a joint effort between our environmental and landscaping department, and the dedicated team from Servest Landscaping who ensure our unique, eco-environment is optimally maintained.”
According to Servest branch manager for landscaping and turf, Rudi Jonck, this year’s judging criteria and scoring was stricter than at previous SALI Awards as the Gold Award reflected a score of higher than 85 percent.
As predictions from climate change experts suggest that even more trying weather conditions can be expected on account of global warming, SALI has highlighted the importance of water wise landscaping.
The institute also recognises landscapers and landscaping projects which have installed a variety of water wise initiatives across the country.
