Operation Bright Eyes sees to the needs of thousands

At a special awards evening at Zimbali Rotary last week the outgoing president of the club, Julie Cloete, congratulated members of having raised R96 000 over the past year which would be distributed to charitable projects.

More than 1000 people can see clearly again after having cataracts removed in the Operation Bright Eyes project in iLembe district over the last ten years.

In June the number reached 1004 people, and the total amount contributed by the Rotary Club of Zimbali to the cataract removal project reached R596 000 – a remarkable achievement for any service club.

At a special awards evening at Zimbali Rotary last week the outgoing president of the club, Julie Cloete, congratulated members of having raised R96 000 over the past year which would be distributed to charitable projects.

These included Operation Bright Eyes, Summerhill House, a local home for orphans and disadvantaged children, The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, a library project which benefitted four local schools and the funding of Rotary Family Health Days in conjunction with Ilembe District health authorities.

Cloete paid special tribute to Miss Ballito organisers Heidi Smith and Karen Landman and Rotarian Brian Elms for his work in the club’s education projects. She presented the Paul Harris Fellowship award to Rotarian Rick Neilands and the second Paul Harris award to Rotarian Kosh Thaver.

Incoming President Kosh Thaver said that under his direction the club would continue to do what it did best – to provide service to humanity and to leave behind something of value.
