New 4×4 driving venue opens at Cable Ski Park
"Our friends from the Ballito Jeep Club helped us set up the trail. It was awesome to have their help."
It was a morning of mud and mayhem at the North Coast 4×4 Trails and Adventures grand opening at Cable Ski Park on Sunday.
Over 20 vehicles took part in a guided 4×4 trail, completing a series of obstacles in their monstrous machines. Due to the rain on Friday, some of the obstacles were rather muddy, putting a few of the vehicles in a sticky situation.
I rode with my brother in his beloved Mahindra Scorpio 4×4, which he has dubbed “The Beast.” I was slightly worried about involving my brother in such an event, as he has managed to get stuck a couple of times while off-roading in The Beast. Fortunately, he drove pretty sensibly on the day and, while some of the participants chose the red or more dangerous option, my brother responsibly stuck to the green one.

The first obstacle set the tone, requiring the vehicles to move through some seriously uneven terrain (i.e. axle twisters), with the passenger of the vehicle holding a shallow bowl of water. While some passengers did not seem to spill a drop, I had a hard time keeping the bowl steady and ended up spilling water all over myself!
Next up, the cars battled through a muddy ditch with the less muddy option on the left and the riskier option on the right. One or two cars who opted for the right had to be towed out, which made for some great entertainment.
Later on in the morning we stopped off and had a quick Airsoft round, with contestants shooting at targets and competing for a prize. The busy morning was finished off with a relaxed braai and prize giving at the park’s restaurant.
Husband and wife Charl and Lelani Lensley started North Coast 4×4 Trails and Adventures when they moved down to Ballito from Johannesburg.
“There are so many places for driving 4x4s in Jo’burg, but nothing here in Ballito,” said Lelani.

They expect to host guided trail rides for small groups about once a month.
