The Philocaly Trail walk will go on!

Born from an initiative started by Ballito local Nikki Williamson, The Philocaly Trail is a provincial beach walk where money is donated to marine conservation for each day walked.

Meaning ‘The Love of Beauty’, Philocaly is all about protecting the marine environment by raising funds for marine conservation.

Despite uncertainty as to when beaches will be reopened this year’s event has not been cancelled.

Entries have opened for the walk set to run from July 29 to August 2.

The 2020 route will start at Mtunzini on day one, and continue through to The Hatchery, the Tugela Mouth, Zinkwazi, Blythedale and finally, on day five end at Sheffield Beach. The total distance is 84 kilometres.

“It is such a magical spot of coastline with the most amazing views, beaches, rock pools and wildlife. The route that we are doing, especially during winter is a very special one,” said Williams.

Williams said they are hopeful with the spotlight placed on reduced pollution during the global Covid-19 pandemic that more people would support the cause.

If regulations are not relaxed in time, the event will be postponed.

During the 2019 Philocaly Trail, 285 participants took part and more than R60 000 was raised and donated to Wildoceans Conservations, Breathe Conservation and KZN Beach Clean Up.
