Idols Qwabe twins get busy building to help struggling Thembeni family

Spokesperson for the Qwabe twins fan base, Philani Langa, said one of their members identified the family and the twins and their father visited them last month.

Doringkop twins, Viggy and Virginia Qwabe, together with their fans have taken the initiative to build a three room house for a struggling family in Thembeni, Groutville.

The twins took the SA Idols television show by storm last year and their fans from around the country united behind them after their dramatic exit from the show.

The show is a contest to determine the best musician in South Africa.

After their exit, they were taken in by one of the country’s music icons, Mthokozi “DJ Tira” Khathi who is a record producer and Kwaito artist from Durban.

He is the founder of the record label Afrotainment and the twins have released two hit songs under the label.

Spokesperson for the Qwabe twins fan base, Philani Langa, said one of their members identified the family and the twins and their father visited them last month.

“They handed over food parcels to the family and agreed that something needed to be done. The couple Sophia Nomoya (53) and George Ngubane (49) lived with their two daughters in a small shack that was not strong enough to survive heavy storms and strong winds. They are unemployed and only survive on pension money for one person. So as a team we identified this family and we came together with the Qwabe twins to discuss what could be done to help them,” said Langa.

Building started on Tuesday morning and the house is due to be completed by August.

“It was really heart warming to see so many people coming forward to help us in this project. We have now collected a reasonable amount to start with the building process. We still need more contributions to make this project a success, so we are still accepting food parcels, equipment, furniture, clothing, building materials and cash contributions from anyone who wishes to assist us.”

He said people had already contributed with their building equipment and machinery for free.

“While the building of the house has started we received good news from KwaDukuza residents who offered to shelter the family while the house is being built. Thank you to everyone who is helping us to build the house,” said Langa.
