Dolphin Coast animal rescue group faces closure
The charity has run into serious trouble as lockdown prevents them from fundraising effectively.
Local pro-life animal rescue organisation, Sables Creatures needs all the help Ballito can offer as vet bills continue to pile up.
The rescue organisation founded by Seema Duwarkah in 2012 rescues neglected animals and provides food and medical treatment if needed.
But taps are not just running dry – they have stopped entirely with the organisation unable to hold vital fundraisers under lockdown regulations.
“We have been trying to help as many as we can but sadly, we cannot help them all without resources and funding,” said Duwarkah.
She said the Ballito community has been nothing but kind to them but it was not enough.
Sables Creatures is completely dependent on the community’s support and now may face closure.
“The reality is our vet bills and running costs are never-ending.”
While the team have done what they can to lower their running costs and existing debt, the charity still has some R41 000 outstanding debt.
“Sables has a love for all animals. Most of these are cats and dogs, but we have seen to a few wild creatures over the years.
“We rescue, sterilise, re-home, provide medical care, offer feeding schemes and assist other rescue organisations where we can.”
Sables Creatures operates mostly in poverty-stricken areas of KwaDukuza, looking after up to 500 animals in a single outreach programme.
Sables is named after founder Duwarkah’s dog, Sable-Ann, who died from Cushing’s syndrome (when a dog’s body produces too much of the hormone cortisol).
In the meantime, Sables has turned to virtual fundraisers but these have not been very successful.
“Our virtual fundraisers have only seen R2 000 – R2 500 raised, which sadly is not enough to pull us out of debt.”
