Electricity protest blamed for multi-vehicle collision on R102

Nine people were injured in the 3 vehicle pile-up.

The removal of illegal electricity connections and subsequent protesting on the R102 culminated in a multi-vehicle collision, between King Shaka International Airport and Canelands on Thursday night.

Earlier that day illegal connections were taken down in Hilltop in Canelands and residents retaliated by barricading both sides of the R102 with burning tyres, logs, debris and rocks.

Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson, Prem Balram said strikers threw logs at moving vehicles.

“Protesters threw debris onto the roadway which resulted in a Hino truck overturning and landing on its side.

“An Isuza bakkie and a VW Polo were also involved in the collision. All three vehicles were extensively damaged,” said Balram.

Paramedics treated nine people before taking them to hospital.

The unrest was allegedly sparked by the removal of illegal electricity connections earlier in the day from Hilltop in Canelands. Photo: Reaction Unit SA.
