Life of Ballito cyclist claimed in Sheffield collision

Tragedy struck on Saturday morning when Simbithi resident Sean Lamprecht (49) was hit by a vehicle and fatally injured while cycling near Flag Animal Farm.

This was the second accident involving a cyclist that week.

On March 11 a commuter was knocked off his bike in Salt Rock in a hit-and-run and was seriously injured.

Lamprecht had been out cycling with a small group of friends when he left the group as they went for breakfast at around 9.30am.

He was returning to Simbithi alone when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle on the dirt road in Sheffield.

Paramedics were called to the scene and Lamprecht was airlifted to a Durban Hospital for further treatment.

He died the next day.

Lamprecht is survived by his two children, James (18) and Hannah (15), ex-wife Sandra, two brothers and a sister.

“We have been divorced for a few years but we were still close and spoke every day. We were married for 18 years,” Sandra said.

Lamprecht was an investment banker and had been living in Simbithi for 7 years after the family moved back to South Africa from England in 2013.

“He was just so kind and had the biggest heart. It did not matter who you were, Sean treated everyone like they were his friends.”

Lamprecht was always a keen cyclist and was well-known among the local cycling community.

“Sean was often down here at Holla and he was just the nicest, kindest guy to everyone who met him, he was a real gentleman. It is a massive loss to our community,” said Holla Trails founder, Nic Jordon.

Constable Zwane at Umhlali Saps confirmed that a case had been opened at Newlands East Saps, but the docket would be transferred to Umhlali Saps for further investigation.
