Loadshedding escalates to stage 2 from 9pm

The system remains vulnerable and unpredictable.

Eskom will take the country back to stage 2 loadshedding tonight from 9pm due to further loss of generation capacity.

Stage 2 will continue until 5am on Saturday.

“This escalation in the stage of loadshedding is required to safeguard the power system after a further loss of generating capacity at the Medupi, Arnot, Duvha and Kendal power stations,” said Eskom in a statement.

The power utility said an increase in demand had put further strain on reserves today.

“The contributing factors for the losses are boiler tube leaks and units tripping, as well as the delay in the return to service of a single unit at the Kendal power station.”

Eskom apologised for the inconvenience and uncertainty caused and asked the public to use electricity sparingly.
