From hobby to business, Hambanathi DJ supplies the local beat

Devising song beats for musicians is keeping the wolf from the door for Nkanyiso Dube “DJ Giso” as he searches for his big break into the music industry.

The 31-year-old music producer and DJ from Hambanathi has become a well-known beat maker around KwaDukuza and Tongaat after completing a sound re-enforcement course at Boston College in KwaDukuza in 2014.

Since then, Dube has been selling song beats to artists in KZN.

“I wanted to work at a radio station, but when I realised that I was not getting a job, I decided to turn my hobby into a business,” said the Stanger Manor-born producer.

Dube has worked with several DJs and artists like Dbn Nyts, DJ Bongz, DJ Sox, DJ Websta, King Sfiso, Africa Records and Nick Holder.

Dube said his long term goal was to own a club where he can give upcoming Djs and artists a platform.

“Right now everyone is struggling due to the pandemic but most if not all the entertainment places only hire the successful artists who already have a following. Nobody is taking into consideration the young guys in the townships who are in serious need of gigs to make ends meet.”
