Rise up movement empowers women with self-defense
Daniel said gender-based violence was considered to be one of the most notable and continuous human rights violations within all societies.
In the face of ever present danger and the scourge of violence against women, the Rise Up Movement in partnership with Ringside Boxing in Umhlali, offered a free self-defense class to young women last Saturday.
Since its inception 18 years ago, the NPO has offered numerous youth-targeted activities, focused on gender-based violence, eradicating bullying, food schemes, skills development and sports.
Founder Josha Daniel said self-defense was needed in the community and hoped the skills acquired empowered young women to better defend themselves in tricky situations.
“We are hoping that women will be empowered to challenge the social ills that plagues us, especially with high femicide rates in South Africa. That they will be less fearful and stronger in knowing they can protect themselves.”
Daniel said gender-based violence was considered to be one of the most notable and continuous human rights violations within all societies.
