Siza Water bursary fund creates futures for youth through education

Now in its fifth year of operation, the Siza Water bursary fund continues to give students a chance at a brighter future.

There are 7 students currently studying with funding from Siza Water, in a variety of different sectors from Accountancy to Engineering.

The bursary is available to students from the Siza Water concession area who need funding to pursue tertiary education opportunities.

The 7 students, Siphamandla Silulange, Ntuthuko Zulu, Amisha Diplal, Mandisa Shabangu, Kerina Naicker, Melokuhle Ngema and Shivaadon Poonan were all present at the annual bursary breakfast on April 6.

iLembe Mayor Sduduzo Gumede was present for the event, as well as a number of ward councillors from KwaDukuza Municipality.

The first stage of vetting students for the fund is done by the ward councillors and they are a crucial step in the funding process, said Siza Water managing director, Shyam Misra.

“Once selected it is up to the students. There is a lot of pressure on them but we are so proud of the our past students and the opportunities they have given themselves with the help of the fund,” he said.

As part of the bursary package, students are able to get work experience at the Siza Water offices to further enhance their skills for future employment.

“Our commitment is to make sure that we look after the youth, that is the primary goal of this fund,” said Misra.

Mayor Gumede echoed his sentiments and urged students to use the opportunity given to them.

“I am happy that Siza Water is taking their role in uplifting the youth seriously, now it is up to the students to bring their skills back into their communities,” he concluded.
