iLembe vaccination rollout continues in wake of third wave and level 4 lockdown

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday that lockdown level 4 will remain for 14 days, running until July 11 and will be assessed thereafter.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, the Delta variant was first detected in South Africa in the beginning of May after 4 people tested positive for the variant – 2 cases from Gauteng and 2 from KZN.

Ramaphosa said the Delta variant was thought to be twice as contagious and more transmissible than the Beta variant, which dominated the second wave in South Africa.

Meanwhile the national vaccination rollout programme continues as 1.2 million additional Johnson & Johnson (J&J) single-dose shots, which need to be used by 11 August, arrived in South Africa last Thursday.

Pfizer has committed to delivering over 15.5 million doses in the third quarter, of which 2.1 million are expected to land in the country in July.

South Africa has so far administered only J&J and Pfizer shots.

People aged 50 and above may receive Covid-19 vaccines from July 15. Registration opens July 1.
