Child rescued from sewer at Tiffany’s beach

To the disbelief of onlookers, a toddler fell into an open sewerage pit near Tiffany’s beach on Saturday morning.

The young boy was playing with his sibling near the showers at Tiffany’s beach, Salt Rock, when he seemed to disappear, said onlooker Volker Grunewald.

“We were showering after coming off the beach when we saw the 2 kids playing behind the showers.

“All of a sudden, the child disappeared and we all ran in that direction after hearing our dog barking,” he said.

The hole to the top of the pit is obscured by overgrown grass and it is an easy hazard to miss.

“All we could hear was his mother screaming ‘where’s my child, where’s my child’.

“It was a terrifying experience. If we were not there the child could have died.”

The hole is about 1.5m deep and the toddler’s mother was able to reach down and grab the 2-year-old.

He was covered in sewage, but otherwise unharmed.

Ward 22 councilor Privi Makhan said she had heard no complaints about the sewerage holes before but that she would take up the matter immediately.

“The site has since been cordoned off until a proper cover is put on. KwaDukuza Municipality have visited,” she said.
