Search underway for man presumed drowned off Ballito this morning

This is the second suspected drowning on the North Coast in the past week.

Rescue teams are searching for a 36-year-old Gauteng man who is feared drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming at Salmon Bay, Ballito, this morning.

According to paramedics, the man was swimming at about 7.30am when he got into difficulty.

“KDM lifeguards and the NSRI launched jet skis and a boat in an attempt to locate the swimmer,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick.

“IPSS Search & Rescue has conducted an aerial search with the use of a drone, sadly, at this time, there has been no sign of the man.”

Salmon Bay is not a designated swimming beach and has no lifeguards stationed there.

“We urge the public to avoid swimming at Salmon Bay,” said Meyrick.

“Numerous swimmers have lost their lives there, many of whom were unaware of the dangers posed by these waters.”

The incident is the second suspected drowning off North Coast beaches in a week.

On Sunday, October 18, an 18-year-old swimmer disappeared at Black Rocks, Zinkwazi.

Search and rescue teams have spent much of the week searching the coastline between Blythedale and Tugela, but the teenager remains missing.
