Body of missing crewmember aboard Shayamanzi houseboat found

The death toll following the fire has now been confirmed as 3, with crew chef Michael Phiri (51) and German tourist, Michael Mirschel (64) also drowning on the day.

The body of Maxwell Nyawo (36), the crewmember who was missing following the Shayamanzi houseboat fire on October 9, has been found.

Following a 6 day search by members of Empangeni Search and Rescue team, Nyawo’s body was located at around 3pm on Friday, October 15 confirmed Saps provincial spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

The death toll following the fire has now been confirmed as 3, with crew chef Michael Phiri (51) and German tourist, Michael Mirschel (64) also drowning on the day.

The houseboat is owned by Ballito businesspeople Roger and Kim Blevin.

The cause of the fire is still currently unknown, but the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has confirmed an investigation into the incident.

An inquest docket has also been opened at Jozini Saps.

The Shayamanzi I engulfed in flames on Lake Jozini on October 9.
