Crippled Eskom effects loadshedding stage 2 into the weekend [Loadshedding times]

Shortage of generation capacity, a failure to return units to service on time and an explosion at Medupi which saw the power station's unit 4 essentially decommissioned for the next 12 to 18 months have all contributed to crippling the state-owned utility provider.

Loadshedding will continue throughout the week until Saturday morning at 5am, taking effect under stage 2 today at 9am.

Shortage of generation capacity, a failure to return units to service on time and an explosion at Medupi which saw the power station’s unit 4 essentially decommissioned for the next 12 to 18 months have all contributed to crippling the state-owned utility provider.

Meanwhile, Eskom has returned units to service at Kusile, Matimba and Arnot power stations but remains constrained with the replenishing of emergency generation reserves being hampered.

“Eskom anticipated to return Koeberg unit 1 to service during the weekend. We also expect to return five other units to service during the week.”

But the power utility has a number of units running with the risk of failure – these cannot be attended to, Eskom said, due to capacity constraints.

As things stand, some 13 333MW is out of play owing to breakdowns, while 5 548MW is out on planned maintenance.

Eskom apologised for the inconvenience of loadshedding, appealing to users to reduce power usage.
