Miss Bachelorette SA semi-finalist Priscilla Chamane starts breakfast drive for street vendors

Local Miss Bachelorette South Africa semi-finalist, Priscilla Chamane, hopes to be remembered for supporting working South Africans.

There is a misconception that South Africans are lazy people, says Chamane, yet so many wake up in the early hours to go out and work for their families.

“We need to support those who are doing their best to earn an honest living and realise how hard residents of this country work.”

Through Kasi Taste restaurant, which she runs in partnership with her sister and Jacob Mthembu – also known as Chef La Phumza – from Hambanathi in Tongaat, she recently started a breakfast drive for street vendors in Ballito and Tongaat.

“By 6am they are already on the road selling vegetables and vetkoeks and other items. They skip breakfast to be at work for those who need breakfast. To me, offering breakfast to them is a way of saying I see you and I support you.”

The 35-year-old single mother also runs a beauty spa, Ubuhle Bendalo Boutique Spa in Tongaat, where Chamane and her sister Zanele Green-Thompson give basic training to those who want to work in the beauty industry, free of charge.

This is one of the reasons why their spa was recognised at the recent Sebenza Girl awards.

Miss Bachelorette South Africa is a women empowerment project aimed at recognising and honouring unmarried mature women through philanthropy, fashion and beauty.

The pageant focuses on women between the ages of 25 and 50 who are unmarried and independent, with or without children.

“I have always liked pageants, however most of them have strict rules that say there is a certain size, height and body structure needed and I always felt left out. So when I heard about this pageant, I felt here is something that needs me. I am happy that it encourages me to make a difference in the community I live in,” said Chamane.
