Barrels of fun on world autism awareness day at KwaDukuza [Watch]
It is estimated that as many as 1% of the world's population is on the autistic spectrum, in varying degrees of severity.
A clear message of autism support was evident at KwaDukuza Mall on Saturday.
Families from across the North Coast came together on World Autism Awareness Day to raise awareness of the condition which affects millions worldwide.
From guest speakers, to face painting and dance sessions, the event had something for everyone and smiles were not hard to come by from children and parents alike.
It is estimated that as many as 1% of the world’s population is on the autistic spectrum, in varying degrees of severity.
“Autism is one of the most difficult neurodevelopmental disorders to deal with. Depending on the child, they can battle with anything from sensory inputs to social integration,” said psychologist and founder of Imbalito Hope College, Nirasha Dhaniram.
“We try hard not to glamourise the condition as Hollywood has sometimes done with movies such as Rain Man or a series like the Good Doctor. Yes, sometimes autism manifests in this way, but more often it is not the case. All of our children, whether high, medium or low functioning, have their place,” she said.
After learning more about the condition from Dhaniram, who was the keynote speaker, those attending planted a tree to commemorate the day.
The event closed with a variety of sponsored treats for the children.
The Huberto’s Luxury Ice Cream stand had the longest line from the children, but Sanchez Spur Stanger, Honcho’s Stanger and Stanger SuperSpar were all well received.
Other sponsors included VW Ballito, Zimbali Rotary Club, Disco Fusion, Virgin Active, Yasmitha Haripersad, Asmalls and Sons, Zebbies Electrical, Ian’s Signs, Finding Neverland Nursey, K9 Security and The North Coast Courier.
“Thank you to everyone who helped to make the day possible. The support has been fantastic and we hope that everyone has learnt something more about autism today,” said organiser and Courier staff member, Abidah Shaik.
