Siza Water retains prestigious Green Drop certification

Overcoming enormous challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, Siza Water was once again awarded Green Drop certification by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The award was handed over to the company by water and sanitation minister Senzo Mchunu in Cape Town last Friday.

To achieve Green Drop certification, a waste water system must achieve a minimum score of 90% when evaluated against the criteria set for wastewater management.

Out of the 995 wastewater systems that were audited for the period July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, only 23 were awarded certification.

“We are extremely proud of achieving Green Drop certification for Frasers and Shakaskraal waste water treatment works, especially in a period during which many companies buckled under the pressures of the pandemic,” said Siza Water managing director Shyam Misra.

The latest Green Drop certification programme report indicated a continued and worrying trend of decline of wastewater services since the programme’s inception in 2008.

The number of services scoring above 50% decreased from 49% in 2009 to 44% in 2011, and this year 39% of municipal wastewater systems scored below 31%, placing them in the “critical” category.

“It is of great concern that there are so many systems with scores below 31%, indicating a dismal state of wastewater management and posing a risk to the environment and public health,” said Mchunu, who went on to commend those that achieved Green Drop accreditation.”

Mchunu vowed to take action against those municipalities that blatantly jeopardised the environment and people’s lives and said he was discussing interventions to improved water services with the minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs,
