KwaDukuza lifeguards support emergency teams – beaches closed

Beaches from Ballito to Zinkwazi are closed.

The flooding in KwaDukuza has caused extensive damage to beach infrastructure, while many beaches are littered with debris.

The municipality has closed all swimming beaches until they are deemed safe to open to the public.

KwaDukuza lifeguard supervisor, Bongani Xulu, said he and a small team had been assisting with inland rescue efforts since Monday in areas affected by the flooding.

“My team and I have been supporting the fire and disaster management team.

“It was exhausting and we have probably had only eight hours sleep since Monday.”

The lifeguards have been rescuing people trapped on islands in swollen rivers, and from trees and assisting with evacuations.

Like the other emergency personnel, they have been sleeping in thier cars and in emergency rooms between call-outs as many cannot reach their homes.

“The guys have been incredible. Never in my life have I seen dedication and commitment at this level. I am so proud of how they pulled together,” said Xulu.

Only a skeleton staff remain on standby for possible emergencies at the beaches.
