Success comes brick by brick for Darnall bricklaying champion
Lungelwa will head to the world championships in October.
Darnall-born civil engineering and construction student, Lungelwa Mtetwa, will be heading off to China after winning the inter-continental leg of the WorldSkills Africa bricklaying competition.
Held at Swakopmund in Namibia from March 28 to April 2, the competition saw team South Africa top the medals table with 5 gold medals, followed by Namibia.
Seventy competitors from 9 African countries competed in 16 skills categories.
Lungelwa entered the bricklaying category, where he was given 16 hours to complete two projects.
The Coastal TVET College student outshined the opposition.
Recognition for his efforts also came from KwaDukuza mayor, Lindi Nhaca.
She said Lungelwa had raised the bar much higher based on the results he obtained in the competition, and that this served as an indication that more had to be done to invest in youth-based programmes.
The competition itself serves to raise the profile of skilled people and is dedicated to achieving economic growth.
