Residents drop in to help clean Ballito skate bowl
A recent makeover of the bowl by RE/MAX Dolphin Realtors and skating legend Dallas Oberholzer has made it a world class venue - and much safer.
After ensuring their homes and communities were safe after the floods, North Coast residents have turned their attention to public clean-up initiatives.
Leading the way, the surfing and skating community targeted the Ballito skate bowl.
The bowl is something of an institution, having kept the skating fraternity occupied for more than 20 years.
“I remember skating the bowl back then and let me tell you, it was dangerous! Many bones have been broken in there and the constant piles of mud after rain never helped,” said Ballito resident, Wayne Duncan.
“We felt it was important to clean it up quickly because it is well used by the locals, particularly with all the work that was put in,” said Duncan, who runs the North Coast Board Riders and Gliders Club.
Residents dropped in to help, bringing spades, buckets and a can-do attitude. Sandbags were also placed on the bank to hopefully prevent future mudslides.
In a few days the bowl was back to its former glory and has already hosted a mini competition, Duncan said.
