Tongaat filmmaker Keveshan Govender is on the move
He started his company KG Castings & Productions last year and produced his first short film titled Diwali Dhamaka, which was televised on DStv as well as GLOW TV South Africa.
Young Tongaat creative Keveshan Govender is determined to make a name for himself in the film industry.
The 18-year-old says his fascination with the industry began at a young age and movies were his “window into the world”.
As someone who grew up enjoying local drama productions, he was keen to own his own production company. He was especially inspired by the late acting legend Shona Ferguson.
“The film (Diwali Dhamaka) is based on how poverty can affect the family dynamic, specifically in an Indian home. It focuses on the celebration of Diwali (Festival of Lights), a very important time and celebration on the Hindu calendar.
“It tells the story of two young boys and their experiences growing up in a poverty-stricken home. Their parents do not have the means to provide them with extravagant clothing, nor can they afford to buy fireworks,” said Govender.
“But the parents’ deepest desire is to see their children happy. This story teaches us to appreciate what we have in life and not to take anything for granted.”
He plans to produce original African content and build his portfolio until he makes his big break.
Seeing his work on TV was a magical feeling.
“I worked extremely hard in making sure the story, cinematography, casting and everything that comes with it were on point. I worked with Ruben Naidoo who stars in Diwali Dhamaka. He is known for his roles in The Indian Detective and Worth, both streaming on Netflix and Showmax.”
Govender is grateful for the support he receives from his family and said they were happy for him and the decision he made.
“They enjoy dropping me off and picking me up from shoots and interviews now and again.”
