Big clean-up by volunteers at Clarke and Salmon Bay

The clean-up was initiated by the Ballito Neighbourhood Watch after patrollers noticed that rubbish and debris washed up along the shore had made the beach difficult to access or enjoy.

Almost two tons of waste, both natural and otherwise, was collected in a well-supported beach clean-up operation at the weekend.

Around 50 volunteers, Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) members and officers from Fidelity ADT turned up at Clarke Bay, armed with black bags and a will-do attitude on Saturday.

The local Democratic Alliance contingent who helped with the clean-up – Privi Makhan, Hunter (3) and Tammy Colley, Ann McDonnell, Hayden Colley (7) and Jack Abrahams.

“We kept hearing from our late patrollers on the 4-6am shift that the beach was getting worse and worse. A spontaneous clean-up was organised and we are really happy with the turnout,” said BNW patrol co-ordinator, Madeleine Hayhurst.

Such was the take-up on the project that multiple trips needed to be made for more black bags after they were filled by the beach cleaners.

Doug Timberlake was one of many residents who participated.

Natural debris, old tyres, plastic, glass and even an artificial leg were picked up on the day, leaving the beaches in a much more tourist and local friendly state.

This followed on from the flood clean-up work already undertaken by the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), which had removed 37 cubic metres worth of waste in the weeks prior.

Sanderan and Samuel Govender jumped in to help with the clean-up at Clarke and Salmon Bay beaches on Saturday.

Organisers thanked the sponsors for their contributions.

The BNW is always on the lookout for more volunteers to help with nighttime patrols. Visit ballitonw.org.za for more information.
