Fundraising starts for construction of Umhlali safehouse for abuse victims
Rise Up Movement founder Josha Daniel says they have already secured a construction company to build the house, but the primary need is to fence the land because of land invasion fears.
Driven by a desire to help and empower victims of abuse, Josha Daniel is currently raising funds to build a safehouse.
The founder of non-profit organisation Rise Up Movement, began to raise awareness of abuse victims in 2003.
He started assisting pupils with basic school stationery, which then grew into feeding projects, awareness campaigns and promoting human rights.
Daniel said the safehouse for abuse victims will be stationed in Umhlali.
Depending on the funds available, he is considering two options – erecting a container home at a cost of about R900 000, or building a proper house with furniture which will cost about a R1.5-million.
“We want to ensure victims are in a space that gives them dignity and hopefully boosts their confidence,” said Daniel.
He stressed one of the most common reasons preventing victims from walking away from their perpetrators was the lack of independence.
“We have people and a company on board to help with skills training which will help those in our care to gain employment or start their own business. If we do not address this issue, we would be fighting a losing battle because the victims might end up running back to their abusers. We must help them become independent.”
The 44-year-old activist said victims would be referred by police or the National Prosecuting Authority.
“We will also have a 24-hour rape centre on site. We will not reveal the exact location of the house for the safety of the people who come to us.”
Mrs South Africa semi-finalist Shan Fourie has taken up the torch of being the Rise Up Movement’s ambassador.
“We are truly in awe of her compassion and dedication to shine a light on this project. We also want to express our gratitude to residents and local businesses for walking this journey with us and acknowledging the urgency of this project as an investment within our communities. Colonel Jackie Papaya of Umhlali Saps also deserves praise for her support.”
Daniel said they are far from reaching their target and appealed for more help and donations.
