Action taken to clear filth in KwaDukuza

More than 50 refuse bags were filled and collected by the municipality's solid waste department.

As part of Action SA’s anti-litter campaign, youth members and councillors of both KwaDukuza local municipality and iLembe district municipality spent Youth Day on June 16 clearing up some of the many illegal dumping sites in KwaDukuza.

Over the years these dumping sites, which pose an environmental and health risk to residents, have increased across KwaDukuza into areas such as Glenhills, Highridge, Stanger Manor, Doesburg and surrounding areas.

More than 50 bags of litter were collected during the clean-up campaign.

ActionSA councillors Nel Sewraj and Sipho Zungu said they wanted to remind the public and municipalities of the 2014 amendment to the National Environmental Management Waste Act 26, which stipulates penalty measures municipalities can implement to combat illegal dumping and establish by-laws to curb littering, both of which are fast becoming a menace to the storm water drainage system.

Shaka’s Head and Shakaskraal are cases in point.
