Eskom ramps up loadshedding to stage 4

Eskom said it needed to conserve emergency generation reserves owing to a deadlock with unions in ongoing labour action.

State-owned utility provider Eskom has said it will move to stage 4 loadshedding today from 11am until midnight, owing to unprotected labour action.

Eskom noted that the move to shift to stage 4 loadshedding was necessary to conserve emergency generation reserves.

“On Saturday and Sunday stage 4 loadshedding will run from 5am to midnight. This is necessary to bolster emergency reserves to react to unforeseen circumstances as well as to replenish emergency reserves in preparation for the week ahead.”

Eskom said it was exploring possible solutions to unlock the deadlock it is in with unions however, cautioned the public that as the shortage of generation capacity persists, the system would become constrained with an elevated risk of loadshedding over the weekend.
