Take Ballito florist Cindy Rynhoud’s advice this Valentine’s Day and make the right choice
While Cindy on average sells 1 400 single stem roses each Valentine's Day, she said people should consider alternatives to the typical red rose.
It is a lazy assumption that red roses are the way to your Valentines’ heart, says Ballito florist Cindy Rynhoud.
Rynhoud urges romantics to put more effort into creating the perfect bundle of flowers for their partner.
“Red roses have become the most commonly bought flowers for this day, but there are dozens more interesting alternatives to show your loved one what they really mean to you,” said Cindy.
Tunnel grown red roses are sold out every year, she said, and orders need to be placed by December if a florist would like to secure sufficient stock.
She alone sells on average 1 400 single stems, which can range in price from R50 upwards.
A single flower grower can deliver on average 150 000 bunches of red tunnel grown roses in the build-up to Valentine’s Day, with 20 roses per bunch.
To create the perfect bouquet Cindy recommended using baby’s breath, ruscus and or pennygum, dahlias, pink or white hydrangeas, garden roses in either pink, red or white and tulips.
“While I don’t like them, baby’s breath is a must when creating the perfect bundle.”
Garden roses are more feminine and delicate in shape than the tunnel grown variety.
“You can do so much more with variety as opposed to a boutique bunch of tunnel grown red roses which can cost as much as R1 600.”
“Remember your special messages, too. These are an annual highlight for me, as nothing beats a unique message.”
A former marketing executive, Cindy found her passion for floristry after single-handedly arranging her sister’s wedding flowers.
She left her corporate career behind and entered the trade in 2009, and has been running Love Laugh at Ballito Lifestyle Centre since 2017.
The language of flowers

Baby’s breath: Eternal love and innocence
Ruscus: Thoughtfulness and humility, and is also very popular among Italians – clearly a good sign.
Pennygum: Strength, protection and abundance.
Dahlia: Commitment, beauty and kindness.
Garden roses: Love and romance, however avoid yellow roses (and other flowers of the same colour, specifically lilies) as these are symbolic of death, mostly fit for funerals.
Tulips: Perfection and deep, unconditional love.
Hydrangeas: Gratitude, grace and beauty.
