Airport arrest of Zimbali estate burglary suspect

A thief allegedly gained access to the luxury home in Zimbali Estate while the owners were away in January.

In a joint operation by Zimbali Estate security, Saps and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), a man was recently arrested for carrying stolen goods, after a robbery inside Zimbali estate, when he entered the King Shaka International Airport.

A perpetrator had allegedly gained access to a luxury home in Zimbali Estate while the owners were away on January 28.

A laptop and jewellery were among the items stolen.

The laptop was tracked to the airport where a suspect was about to board a local flight on Sunday, January 30.

Zimbali Estate head of department for ICT and Security, Avishkar Maharaj, said they do not tolerate crime on their estate.

“We will work with Saps in their investigation as the safety of our residents is paramount.”

Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Nqobile Gwala, said the man appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 30, for possession of suspected stolen property.

She said he might be linked to the burglary case opened at Umhlali Police Station for the robbery at Zimbali, but that would still need to be proven (i.e the accused was caught carrying the stolen goods but might not be the same person who robbed the home on January 28).
