Colourful Kavady festival returns to Tongaat
The festival attracted a great many devotees from other areas who came to pay their respects to Lord Muruga.
Tongaat was brought to a standstill as thousands of devotees took part in the 114th Punguni Woothira Kavady Mahotsavam from Outspan grounds to the Brake Village Temple last Saturday.
The street was painted orange as devotees carrying their kavadys walked behind the chariot carrying Lord Muruga, which was pulled by hundreds of worshippers.
While walking from the grounds, barefoot, there were regular stops, and Paveshan Setherayer and Vinil Ammersingh, who were carrying the main kavady, danced to the songs and devotion.
Pierced from tongue to toe with hooks and needles to show their devotion to Lord Muruga, devotees carry the kavady to symbolise carrying their burdens and then lay them at Lord Muruga’s feet to ask him to dispose of them.
The Kavady was held from March 30 until last weekend, and it attracted a great many devotees from other areas who came to pay their respects to Lord Muruga.
It has been three years since the Kavady was held without Covid-19 restrictions.
Brake Village Temple chairman, Justin Pillay, said on behalf of the management committee, trustees and resident priest, they would like to thank all devotees, sponsors, donors and volunteers for their contributions and assistance.
