Salt Rock and Sheffield power outage passes 24 hours

It is understood the fault has been located and electricians are currently busy with repair work.

A cable fault between the Shakaskraal and Sheffield substations has been identified, but electricians are unable to say when power will be restored.

More than twenty-four hours since large parts of Salt Rock, Chaka’s Rock, Umhlali, Simbithi, Palm Lakes Estate and Tinley Manor Beach went dark, electricity remains off, despite numerous attempts to see it restored.

Yesterday, attempts to divert electricity supply through other substations saw supply restored momentarily, but this was lost again at about 5pm.

Shakaskraal substation’s feed went down during efforts to switch on several other substations.

It was later established that a cable fault between the Sheffield and Shakaskraal substations had caused the trip.

Eskom technicians were sent out to perform a switch-on at the Shakaskraal substation before power tripped again.

Insulators at the Chaka’s Rock substation had also blown during these attempts.

The problem persisted throughout the night.

This morning Salt Rock ward councillor Privi Makhan said electricians had located the source of the problem and were busy with repairs.

“There are unfortunately no exact timeframes as to when power will be restored,” she said.
