Partnership to promote E-waste recycling

Little has been done in the iLembe district to comply with the WEEE ban, with limited collection and disposal options available, especially for households and small businesses.

Many residents and small businesses remain unaware that dumping E-waste (unwanted electronic products) at landfill sites has been banned and that the waste must be recycled.

To address the issue, local and provincial stakeholders recently met in Ballito to discuss a partnership to improve WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) recycling efforts in the district.

The partnership, titled “WEEE are iLembe” and consisting of a wide range of interested parties, aims to increase the amount of E-waste released for recycling, grow the industry, and create new business and employment opportunities.

The objectives include increasing awareness and education, enhancing WEEE collection, harmonising local policies and by-laws, and creating a platform for engagement.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment introduced a E-waste landfill ban in August 2021, but many local governments, small businesses and households are still not aware of the implications of this ban.

Four Ballito recycling companies have a national footprint and recover and treat E-waste.

However, little has been done in the iLembe district to comply with the WEEE ban, with limited collection and disposal options available, especially for households and small businesses.

The partnership aims to create a broader understanding of how waste can be monetised and create sustainable job opportunities, especially for disadvantaged communities.
